BIT BY BIT IT

Studio City Home Studios and Offices

A lot of people in Studio City work in or near the film and TV business, and that changes what they ask me for. Editors, colorists, sound people and producers often work from a spare room, and they move large files around all day. Wi-Fi is the wrong tool for that.

If you edit video at home, the connection between your computer and your storage matters more than the speed of your internet plan. I run ethernet to your desk, set up a switch that can handle it, and can install a small network storage box or server so projects live in one place and back up on a schedule. I explain how it is set up so you are not locked out of your own gear.

Those jobs sound big, but most are a cable, a switch and a bit of careful configuration.

Hills, canyon roads and older houses

South of Ventura the streets curve up toward Laurel Canyon and the hills, and many houses there have odd layouts, split levels and decks. Cable paths take planning in those. North of the boulevard, the flat streets have a lot of 1940s and 1950s houses and some newer builds. I check the attic and the garage first, because that usually gives the cleanest route down into the walls.

Small offices and shops

The strip of Ventura Boulevard through Studio City has restaurants, salons and small offices. I set up a network that stays up through the lunch rush, with a camera view of the door and register if you want one.

Just over the hill

Studio City is a short drive over the hill from Van Nuys on most days. Call or write, I will come and walk the space with you, and then send a plan and quote.

What I do in Studio City

  • Ethernet wiring

I pull cable through the walls and attic to the rooms you pick, finish it at clean wall jacks, and bring every run back to one central spot.

  • Servers and network gear

Racks, switches, routers and home or office servers installed, configured and cabled neatly.

  • Wi-Fi coverage

Access points wired back to your network so the signal reaches the rooms that used to be dead zones.

  • Security cameras

Wired cameras mounted where they cover what matters, a recorder set up to keep footage, and viewing on your phone.

  • Laptop and PC repair

A computer that's slow, won't start, throws errors, or just isn't acting right. I'll track down what's wrong and get it running again.

  • Network troubleshooting

Internet that crawls, devices that keep dropping off, or a setup someone else left behind. I'll find the problem and fix it.

How a job goes

  1. Walkthrough

I come out, look at the space, and you show me where you want connections and cameras.

  2. Plan and quote

You get a clear plan of what goes where and a price before any work starts.

  3. Install

Cable gets run, gear gets mounted, and everything is tested room by room.

  4. Hand-off

Before I leave, I show you how to use the camera app, the Wi-Fi and anything else I set up.
