BIT BY BIT IT

Careful Cabling in Los Feliz Homes

Los Feliz sits at the foot of Griffith Park, and its streets are full of older houses with a lot of character: Spanish revivals with tile roofs, Craftsmans, a few big period estates, and apartment courtyards. These are houses where the walls matter, and I treat them that way.

Plaster, tile and tight attics

Spanish revival homes usually have thick plaster walls and roofs of clay tile. Both are poor for Wi-Fi and awkward for cable. I avoid stepping on tile where I can, and I get into the attic through an existing hatch or closet. When I run cable down, I choose paths that do not cut through decorative plaster or wood trim. If I need to cut, I tell you where and why first.

Wi-Fi in a house with thick walls

A router in the living room will not cover a hillside house with a guesthouse and a back patio. I place wired access points by room and cable them to a single place in the house. The result is a signal you can count on in the kitchen, the office and out on the deck.

Courtyard apartments

Los Feliz has many older courtyard buildings, where tenants share walls and landlords control the structure. I work within the unit, and I list what would require the manager’s approval before I start.

Hillhurst and Vermont

The shops and cafes along Hillhurst and Vermont have older buildings, with small back rooms for the network. I wire the register and printer, add Wi-Fi that works for staff and a separate one for customers, and mount cameras at the door.

Hillside lots

Properties on the slopes toward Griffith Park often have long staircases and gates. I walk the route someone would take to reach your door and place cameras along it.

Over the hill

Los Feliz is east and over the hill from Van Nuys. Call or write and tell me about your house.

What I do in Los Feliz

  • Ethernet wiring

I pull cable through the walls and attic to the rooms you pick, finish it at clean wall jacks, and bring every run back to one central spot.

  • Wi-Fi coverage

Access points wired back to your network so the signal reaches the rooms that used to be dead zones.

  • Security cameras

Wired cameras mounted where they cover what matters, a recorder set up to keep footage, and viewing on your phone.

  • Servers and network gear

Racks, switches, routers and home or office servers installed, configured and cabled neatly.

  • Laptop and PC repair

A computer that's slow, won't start, throws errors, or just isn't acting right. I'll track down what's wrong and get it running again.

  • Network troubleshooting

Internet that crawls, devices that keep dropping off, or a setup someone else left behind. I'll find the problem and fix it.

How a job goes

  1. Walkthrough

I come out, look at the space, and you show me where you want connections and cameras.

  2. Plan and quote

You get a clear plan of what goes where and a price before any work starts.

  3. Install

Cable gets run, gear gets mounted, and everything is tested room by room.

  4. Hand-off

Before I leave, I show you how to use the camera app, the Wi-Fi and anything else I set up.
