BIT BY BIT IT

Brentwood Canyon and Hillside Homes

Brentwood is a neighborhood of big lots and big houses. Along San Vicente Boulevard and up in Mandeville Canyon, many properties are set back behind gates and landscaping, with main houses, guest houses and pool houses spread across the grounds.

Properties that need a plan

On a property like that, a camera at the door is the least of it. I walk the drive, the gate, the garden paths and the edge of the lot with you, and I choose positions that show who is arriving before they reach the house. Cable runs through the attic, the eaves and, where the distance is long, through conduit. The recorder stays inside the main house, and we set the phone app up together.

Coverage across the buildings

A guest house or studio behind the main house usually has poor Wi-Fi. I run cable or set up a wireless link when it makes sense, then put a wired access point inside the outbuilding. The main house gets one on each floor.

Older and canyon homes

Many Brentwood homes were built in the mid-century and have been remodeled. Plaster and stucco, second stories and additions all affect signal. Canyon houses sit on slopes with several levels and unusual layouts. I check the attic, the crawlspace and any utility chases before I quote the run.

Privacy and discretion

I understand that people here often want their wiring and cameras kept low-profile. I keep hardware discreet and cable out of sight where possible.

Brentwood Village

The shops and offices around Brentwood Village run on small networks. I handle the usual tasks: register and printer connections, staff and guest Wi-Fi, and door cameras.

West of the 405

Brentwood is on the far side of the 405 from Van Nuys, through the Sepulveda Pass. Write or call, and I will schedule a walkthrough.

What I do in Brentwood

  • Security cameras

Wired cameras mounted where they cover what matters, a recorder set up to keep footage, and viewing on your phone.

  • Wi-Fi coverage

Access points wired back to your network so the signal reaches the rooms that used to be dead zones.

  • Ethernet wiring

I pull cable through the walls and attic to the rooms you pick, finish it at clean wall jacks, and bring every run back to one central spot.

  • Servers and network gear

Racks, switches, routers and home or office servers installed, configured and cabled neatly.

  • Laptop and PC repair

A computer that's slow, won't start, throws errors, or just isn't acting right. I'll track down what's wrong and get it running again.

  • Network troubleshooting

Internet that crawls, devices that keep dropping off, or a setup someone else left behind. I'll find the problem and fix it.
